Comac has always been committed to creating floor cleaning machines that respect the environment, investing in the development of sustainable solutions and technologies, seeking materials that can be easily recycled and ensuring that the entire production process has a low environmental impact.
These assumptions lead to the development of projects such as the #comac4water, products such as the C85 Non Stop Cleaning scrubbing machine, which allows to reuse water used during cleaning operations, and technologies such as the Comac Dosing System that eliminates waste by separately dosing water and detergent depending on the dirt conditions of the floor.
But, in order to be able to talk about a “green” business model, it is important that the commitment to environmental protection involves the whole company: people, customers, suppliers and every aspect of the business. Starting from this consideration Comac is supporting a corporate social responsibility culture also within the company itself, thus trying to be more and more attentive to ecological aspects. In fact, when we talk about corporate sustainability and eco-friendly companies it is natural to consider the concept of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), or rather, the company’s intent to integrate its development and economic objectives with the global social and environmental issues.
As people are one of the main stakeholders in Comac’s CSR, the company’s choice is to develop responsible initiatives that can fit into the daily life of employees. The most recent initiative that involved the Italian headquarter of Comac, provides the installation of water dispensers directly connected to the water supply, so that filtered and purified water is available and ready to drink. To thank the collaborators who joined the company’s efforts in reducing the use of plastic, Comac staff has been provided with stainless steel reusable bottles that can be filled directly from the dispensers. In this way, internal consumption has been remodeled, drastically reducing the use of single-use plastic bottles and people have been made aware of a global hot topic: reduce the use of plastic to protect the environment.
Moreover, thanks to the collaboration with Argenta, the partner who supports Comac in the organization and restock of the break rooms inside the company, the classic single-use plastic cups and stirrers dispensed by vending machines have been replaced with recyclable paper cups and wood stirrers.
Thanks to this initiative, within one year Comac will eliminate more than 26,000 single-use plastic bottles, and approximately 173,000 between single-use plastic cups and stirrers, for a total reduction of almost 600 kilograms of plastic in the company. A Comac employee thus reduces the consumption of single-use plastic by 3.5 kilograms per year. If we consider that the European Commission has calculated that the average European produces 31 kilograms of plastic packaging waste, this initiative can reduce the incidence by 11% per person.
Surely this is not a huge amount compared to world consumption, but in case the prediction that by 2050 there will be more plastic than fish in the world’s oceans will come true, even a small action can make a huge difference.
At this point, a spontaneous question arises: what happens to other plastic packaging waste? For years Comac has been promoting an awareness campaign among its employees to improve waste management by placing appropriately labelled waste disposal containers in the working areas and creating a manual for internal use which explains the correct waste sorting.
As happens during the design of Comac’s floor cleaning machines, even in this project water was the spring that triggered the improvement in corporate sustainability. In fact, limiting the use of plastic allows Comac to contribute to environmental protection, thus becoming an increasingly green company, that is the main objective of the #comac4environment concept.
