Definition of Vacuum Cleaner
Let’s start from the basics with the definition of vacuum cleaner. The vacuum cleaner is an electromechanical device designed to suck up particles of various types and sizes, and then store them in suitable containers, called tanks. The market offers many different models, from domestic vacuum cleaners, to professional wet and dry vacuum cleaners up to industrial vacuum cleaners. We can say that there is a specific vacuum cleaner to satisfy any type of vacuuming requirement.
Domestic Vacuum Cleaner, Dry Vacuum Cleaner and Wet & Dry Vacuum Cleaner: what’s the difference?
What is the difference between a domestic vacuum cleaner, a dry vacuum cleaner and a wet & dry vacuum cleaner? Here is the first distinction to be made when it comes to vacuum cleaners. These terms are often used interchangeably, but in the professional cleaning field, talking about a domestic vacuum cleaner or dry vacuum cleaner has two different shades of meaning.
Generally speaking, we refer to domestic vacuum cleaners for traditional models that only suck up dust. While professional vacuum cleaners – or Dry vacuums – are more professional models that can suck up not only dust but also small solid residues. If they suck up liquids, on the other hand, we call them wet and dry vacuum cleaners – or Wet & Dry only. With regard to wet and dry vacuums it is worth remembering that changing their filter enables them to work as dry vacuum cleaners. Nevertheless, dry vacuum cleaners can never be used as a wet and dry vacuums.
Features of professional Wet & Dry vacuum cleaners
Professional wet & dry vacuum cleaners are designed to vacuum both solids and liquids at the same time. This is because the air flow that conveys the solids and liquids is not directed directly onto the filter but onto a dynamic separator, called a cyclone. In this way the heaviest material is collected at the bottom of the container, where liquids and solids can be separated by grids, while the air and lighter particles are filtered and reintroduced into the environment. It is worth remembering that changing the filter on a wet & dry vacuum cleaner enables it to work as a dry vacuum cleaner, but a dry vacuum cleaner can never be used as a wet & dry vacuum cleaner.
What does a vacuum cleaner consist of?
Now let’s see how a dry vacuum cleaner or wet & dry vacuum cleaner is made. In general we can say that it is composed of:
- A collection system, called tank or container, where the dust, solids or liquids removed from surfaces are collected
- One or more vacuum motors
- A filtration system to filter the incoming and outgoing air
- The accessories to adapt the vacuums to the specific cleaning needs
How does a vacuum cleaner work?
The motor, or vacuum motors are devices on whose rotation axis one or more fans are installed. When the vacuum cleaner is turned on, the motor starts and produces the rotation of the fan – or fans. It is this rotation that sucks the air from the outside and creates a depression inside the tank of the vacuum cleaner. In addition to the air, the vacuum cleaner also sucks in any particles present. If the particles are large in dimensions they settle on the bottom. If the particles are small, they are retained by the filter to allow clean air to be released back into the environment.
