The attention on gender issues in the workplace has increased over the years. Promoting gender equality in the workplace has become a crucial issue for all companies who want to build an inclusive and open work environment. This has led to an increasingly important female presence even in men-dominated industries, such as industrial production and manufacturing. Comac has also recorded this positive trend by experiencing first-hand how women are slowly and constantly changing the face of the company.
The benefits of diversity and inclusion in the workplace
Professional equality between genders is an increasingly relevant topic for companies, both for ethical and business reasons. Having a balanced representation of men and women brings numerous advantages, including the improvement of the corporate image and the increase both in productivity and financial results. Furthermore, gender equality can lead companies to greater creativity, which inevitably leads to a promotion of innovation. In addition, promoting diversity and inclusion in the workplace often contributes to the creation of a collaborative environment, as well as greater representation in the market. It is therefore a winning strategy for all companies that want to remain competitive and sustainable in the long term. Making the most of the potential of all personnel while also valuing gender differences is currently an ethical choice, but in the near future it could become a requirement that all companies will have to fulfil.
The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and Goal 5 on gender equality
We also understand that gender equality is an important topic, as it is one of the goals included in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development approved by the United Nations in 2015. The 193 UN Member States have signed up to the action program for sustainable development which, among the various objectives, includes the achievement of gender equality in all sectors. This means that States will have to legislate in order to eliminate the gender gap and companies, as actors of the Agenda, will have to implement corporate inclusion policies to achieve gender equality.
How Comac is changing its face: strategies to promote diversity and inclusion
Comac is increasingly aware of its responsibility for achieving sustainable development with regard to the society and the environment in which we live. For this reason we have implemented a series of strategies and objectives that aim at continuous improvement and to achieve this we are committed to ethical behavior towards personnel located all over the world.
Female-based mechanical engineering within Comac
One of Comac’s main goals is to promote diversity and inclusion within the company. We are constantly working to create an inclusive and open workplace where all people, regardless of gender, have the opportunity to realize their potential. In fact, in February 2023 the number of female labor force at Comac Italy increased by 20% compared to 2022, thus boosting the female component which is now 22% of the total. A positive trend, especially if we think that the company operates in the engineering industry, famous for the limited presence of women. In fact, the number of women active in the production departments consisting of assembly, shipping and warehouse of Comac has doubled.
New female collaborations
Comac’s new supplier selection method – which is not based exclusively on economic criteria, but also evaluates social, ethical and environmental factors – has led us to create new partnerships. The latest is the one with Progetto Quid, the ethical and sustainable fashion brand through which the social enterprise gives work to vulnerable people, especially women, to support them in overcoming difficult personal and social situations. Thanks to this synergy, the new corporate uniforms allow us to support a project that promotes gender equality also in our community, and therefore not only within Comac.
The future of Comac
Women are therefore changing the face of Comac. Comac, in turn, is changing the face of the engineering industry not only through the promotion of diversity and inclusion, but also through technological innovation and sustainability. So, the future is bright: the company continues to grow and innovate to meet the needs of its customers and to have a positive impact both on society and the environment. It is important to continue to raise awareness and promote policies that promote gender equality and diversity at work. We, as individuals, can do our part to support diversity and inclusion, both by promoting these values in our professional and daily lives. Indeed, as consumers, we can choose to support companies that are constantly committed to diversity and inclusion.
